Rumah Peranakan

Blogging backwards.

Since I didn’t blog much about my previous Penang trip, allow me to show you what I did when I was there on that island. My first destination was suggested by Clarissa to visit this rumah Peranakan which is somewhere in town -lah. I don’t know where. Gotta pay entrance fee to see the house one.

If you don’t know what is peranakan, I suggest you to watch the late Yasmin Ahmad’s movie - Sepet, which got a very good description of who is peranakan and what they did to the local malay girls. I still remember the scene is somewhere when the main character’s friend got into an accident and end up in the hospital.

Anyway, we were greeted by an Indian immigrant who walk us thru the house with a very thick Indian accent.

Apparently the house is very very old, with a lot of ancestors’ drawings and pictures, and the whole house is now a few million. I guess. Hehe. My facts are pretty bad because I can hardly remember what he said that day.

Anyway, it might look really small from the outside but there are so many turnings and big rooms that it is almost like a big bungalow d. Can easily got lost inside. Well, a house with a private temple and 2 dining rooms (for English and Chinese style) is considered big for me -lah.

And for me I like the antiques a lot. Have a look at this impressive radio.

There is another big antique camera lying around.

Besides room, they also exhibits stuffs that the Peranakan people used. Stuffs like earrings, curtains, hangers, and etc. I feel a bit cheated because I was toured by an immigrant -lah. Sometimes I start to doubt the things that he said because he doesn’t understand the culture, he doesn’t understand our culture and how come he is telling this to us? Weird right?

Anyway, it was quite a pleasant trip, even thou I feel cheated by the things that tour guide told me. They should put a better person to in charge of this whole thing.
