Grandpa’s era

Posted by peanut on Monday May 25, 2009 Under as a med student

I see most of my reader like the grandma chronicles a lot but unfortunately/fortunately it had came to an end. Grandpa had take over my group! (Grandpa and grandma is not married to each other, we call them that because they are the oldest surgeons around).

Compared to Grandma who is not of any important status in the surgical department, Grandpa is like the king of the department like that. People stand up while talking to him, listen to him, and even we need to wear out cap while he is teaching, be it morning rounds, during class, or just around.

I think Grandpa had draw out the standard for all the surgeons. If he is not around, things seem to be a bit out of control but when he is back, he is the king, and everybody listens to him. Things will get done properly, and prepared properly.

He likes to shoot questions, be it to doctors, surgeons or students. And he make sure everybody listen to it so if you couldn’t answer them, you will be quite ‘famous’.

Actually we had been waiting for the chance to be under his wings and today proves that he is good in both teaching, sarcasm, and even thou old, but still inspired everyday (that’s what I see). Anyway, he makes me feel like reading more, compared to Grandma who is less serious and have some funny problem.

Nobody mess with Grandpa, and I meant it, NOBODY.

Photobucket

If he ever found out I took this picture, I think I’ll tell him I’m a big fan. And hopefully he will laugh it off.

Grandpa wants us to stay over in the hospital at least once before we finish this cycle. Will start from me and ’senior citizen’ so I wouldn’t be around tonight (written for my housemates) and please don’t miss me! Gotta go cook some food so that I wouldn’t be starving today night. Adios! Hopefully I get a jonah night! (wanna see things marrr).

Grandpa’s advice for all today:

“дорогу осилит идущий”

Can’t really translate this but it means that the one who walks the path will for sure overcome it.

Grandma Power II

Posted by peanut on Friday May 22, 2009 Under as a med student

The Grandma Chronicles is still going on.

Ability No.3 - Dementia

Background - My friend’s name is Albert Yong Kui Chun and Jothi (the only India Indian classmate I have in my group. Russians have problem pronouncing our name so usually we only choose one syllable for them to pronounce.

Grandma : (Saw Albert walking towards her) What is your name again?
Albert : Yong.
Grandma : No, don’t lie. (Look super beh syok).
Albert : Chun?
Grandma : No!!
Grandma : Ah, you are Jothi.
Classmates : MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA..

Ability No.4 - Self-awareness.

Background : Monkey 3 was missing from the class. A surgeon told him to help out in the OT and both of them enter the class. The surgeon tried to explain to grandma that he ‘borrowed’ one of her student.

Grandma : (To the doctor) Why are you working as an advocate now? You don’t need to protect my student. (Surgeon ran off)
Grandma : (Turn to Monkey 3) Where are you just now? You didn’t see the operation with us right?
Monkey 3 : No! I was there standing beside you!
Grandma : No! How can you be there! I counted!
Monkey 3 : I was there! And a surgeon asked me to help him with his operation (truth).
Grandma : How can you do that? You are the boss is it? You do things without tell me?
Monkey 3 : I wanted to tell you but he was in a hurry.
Grandma : What? So you can’t come and tell me? I’M NOT DEAD YET YOU KNOW!
Monkey 3 : *Speechless*

Ability No.5 - Selective deafness LEVEL 2

Grandma : Tomorrow prepare the topic - hernia.
Monkey 4 : [Quite loud]Tomorrow is Saturday! (Actually Saturday we are officially free).
Grandma : Any questions?
Monkey 4 : [Even louder]Tomorrow is Saturday, we have holiday!
Grandma : Understand?? (Looking at us) Tomorrow come at 9am.
Monkey 4 : [Already very loud]Tomorrow is Saturday.
Grandma : (Looking at us waiting for questions).
Monkey 4 : [Give up tone] Tomorrow is Saturday.
Grandma : (Looking at Monkey 4) You had already said it 4 times!

All I want to say is,

See, I told you she is not dumb!

And it is better to give in to her, rather than arguing, because you will always lose.

Grandma Power

Even thou I had her for my surgery cycle last semester, I still can’t control myself from laughing my ass off whenever she starts to do some really unexpected thing or FULLY UTILIZING her old age on us youngsters.

Ability No.1 - Monkeys taming

Background - The students from the other group like to come to class late. 45 minutes late or sometimes 1 hour late. Lots of teacher could not control them. Some tried to scold, some just choose to ignore. But for grandma, well, I gotta respect her because she can do it.

Grandma : Who didn’t come for the morning meeting today?
Monkeys : All here!
Grandma : (Pretend not hearing, and counting down one by one) Monkey 1?
Monkey 1 : Yes I was here.
Grandma : Monkey 2?
Monkey 2 : Yes I was here.
Grandma : Monkey 3?
Monkey 3 : Yes I was here (he lied).
Grandma : Monkey 4?
Monkey 4 : Yes I was here.
Grandma : Okay, so all the others didn’t come because I counted this morning there are only 4 of you.
Monkey 5 : I came! (truth).
Grandma : How can you be there? I counted 4 people!
Monkey 5 : (Point at Monkey 3) No! I came, he lied!

See, she succeeded in making them kill each other.

Grandma : You came late for class today right?
Monkey 3 : Only for 3 minutes.
Grandma : You came late for class yesterday right?
Monkey 3 : Only for 5 minutes.
Grandma : Good, take out your paper, you are going to write me 2 reports.

The next day.

Grandma : Monkey 3, you are late today right?
Monkey 3 : Only for 1 minute, I was standing right outside the door! (which is true).
Grandma : Take out your paper, you are going to write me 3 reports.
Peanut : WAKAKAKAKAKAKAKAKAKA!

Ability No.2 - Good hearing but still deaf.

Background - If you would tell me to describe grandma, I would say that many people think that she is dumb but actually she is the one fooling you. She can hear EVERYTHING but she just refuse to LISTEN!

Grandma : Go to your wards and come back to me at 1.30pm.
Monkey 1 : [Loud] Can you let us go earlier because today we need to go for consultation.
Grandma : You all understand? Any questions? Come back here at 1.30pm.
Monkey 1 : [Even louder] We need to go earlier because we want to go for meals and then go to consultation!
Grandma : (Pretend didn’t listen even thou Monkey 1 is right in front of her)
Monkey 1 : [Practically shouting]
Grandma : (Decided this time if not giving response is too obvious). What time is the consultation?
Monkey 1 : At 1pm! (he lied)
Grandma : Look around (all monkeys shouted 1pm real loud).
Some of us : (Very soft, in fact I don’t know how she can hear this) Actually it is at 3pm.
Grandma : 3 PM?!?!?!?!! Then why you all tell me it is at 1pm?
Monkey 3 : (Noticing that his lie is not valid anymore) Oh I said 13:00!
Peanut : LOL!

Until now, she is the only teacher that could make all the monkeys come to class early. Because no excuses are entertained. She is deaf to excuses. LOL.

Yea, deaf to excuses. This even sounded motivational.

Pampered bunch

Posted by peanut on Monday May 18, 2009 Under as a med student

Went to consultation given by the foreign dean just now. Everything is as normal except the fact that he kept on telling us that if we wanted any extra lectures about any topic, we should voice out and let them know so that they could organize it for us.

Huh?

I got the idea that other uni doesn’t really care much about what their students pick up or not but how come my uni is so enthusiastic in making sure we utilize them well?

A bit weird right?

Maybe we were pampered all the time but we didn’t know.

Well, I know the life in Russia can be harsh for us Malaysians who seem to enjoy all kinds of priorities and comfort back home. And the comfort includes democracy. It is absolutely a different world here. I can’t help but to acknowledge their changes through out these 7 years while I’m here. From dictator type of organization to listen to us, questioning about our needs and giving us permission to organize lots of stuffs. These are seriously big changes.

After all, I think all my teachers and the uni in general treated me well (up till this moment). Hopefully my memory about it would be a sweet one.

Sunday post

Posted by peanut on Sunday May 17, 2009 Under as a med student

Tada… Just got back from hostel with a new hair cut. I think this hair cut is pretty neat and thanks to Sibol for the professional service. LOL. If you hate Russian barbers, try him!

After that went down to the hall to see the votes for the coming Malaysian Chinese Society Organizations. The final years were not invited, well, as you know, we were finishing med school for good in a little bit of more than a month.

Photobucket

I was the only final year student there. I felt sooooooo young! Except during the time when SuChing kept on mumbling ’senior citizens’ beside my ear. Personally I think the whole thing is a success as everybody took part and it was not tense at all. Fun & easy, that’s the way I like it.

Ops, what I like is no longer important actually.

Congrats to Chai who got the post of the leader for this organization.

Congrats to Manager who bagged the post of this organization’s webmaster (seriously I think no one should be in this post other than you).

Congrats to Jenna Foo (Maaa housemate) who became the what? Fund rising head or something. You can now use your business brain in the correct place for once.

Congrats to Cherrie who became the helper of the webmaster’s team. A good use of you camera in the future. LOL.

That is a lot of posts to organize only 1 activity in 1 year - The Chinese New Year. LOL. But I guess they would come up with something new or more co-curricular activities to spice up the ever-so-boring life of a Volgogradian Med student. Too bad I’m going home and can’t see this thing grow.

Good luck! And may I suggest 1 annual activity? Paint ball. Line up the juniors and seniors and have a dual within 8meters. It would be fun to see people in blue blacks.

Running out of time

Posted by peanut on Saturday May 16, 2009 Under as a med student

Photobucket

My plan to prepare for my finals is ’slightly’ late but hopefully it works. Well, in another way, I was preparing the whole 7 years anyway. I should have noticed the finals earlier. But the thing is everybody is kinda dreamy about this. Nobody is really aware of it until the dates are out. And there is practically no study break at all, something which is abnormal through out the 7 years ‘exam experience’. I’m going to finish my hectic surgical class until 29th and my first paper would be on the 2nd of June.

Last month running towards the finishing line is weird. The brain is filled with all kinds of imagination about the future, days to come, and how everything will turn out to be.

Am I really going to be a doctor?

It still feels like a dream. A dream comes true? I don’t feel that yet.

Anyway, exams first, holiday next (hopefully a very good one), and future in third place.

End of pediatric surgery

Posted by peanut on Thursday May 7, 2009 Under as a med student, characters, cool stuffs

We had some almost 2 weeks of pediatric surgery in 7th hospital. Taught by one of the most experience doctor in this field, I think I learned a lot, be in medically, personality wise, and the idea towards life. He is a very old doctor, and a very good one as well.

Putting myself in the field of surgery is one of my dream. I had the chance to have this short conversation of asking an old surgeon like him, what he thinks about surgery, and what is his definition of a good surgeon. Surprisingly, he said that the diagnostic part is more important than any other things. Skills could be learned from time to time, if you can’t do the operation properly the first time, try the second time, try the tenth time. But the skill to diagnose and claim that the patient has a surgical pathology must be acquired during med school itself. And that skill shall be refined and updated.

He likes photography. He said that he started taking pictures of his patients since 2nd year of med school. And now each day we just go to class, sit there, and enjoy all the slides and x-rays, everything he took with his camera for the passed 20 years as a pediatric surgeon. We saw crazy stuffs, and he would tell the story of each patient like it happened yesterday, he would remember their names, he would happily said that who is alive and who is not.

He has white hair, yet when he talks about medicine, you see sparks in his eye. It is like he is some medical junkie. New info, new tactics, new technique, and at the same time, would sit down and look back at all the correct AND wrong decision that he had made through out his practice, and remind us that we should remember this and that so that the same thing shall not happen again.

I respect surgeons. But pediatric surgeons are like one step more superior than surgeons. Why? Operating on a 70kg big size man is different to operating a 5 months of baby who just only learned how to sit, or a newborn who just only learned how to breathe. Small veins, fragile skin, small abdomen, even their bones are not fully grown yet.

He sparks my interest in photography like adding NOS to fire -_-’

He even recorded those weird cases that he encountered. Like babies inside a baby, crazy foreign body inside the GIT, all kinds of big size malignancy.

You should see his black and white pictures. They are real classics. And no doubt all his collections would seriously cost a whole lot if he wants to sell it. But I guess it is his life already.

No matter how, I think I’ll start taking more pictures nowadays! Let’s start with a pic of him explaining a x-ray.

Trichobezoar

Posted by peanut on Wednesday May 6, 2009 Under as a med student, cool stuffs

Gross picture ahead!

The doc happily took out a plastic bag. Long time ago, a girl was admitted to the hospital for feeling a lump somewhere in her abdomen. The mother of the girl took her to the hospital and later on was diagnosed with tumor.

The doc had a short talk with the parents, and found out that the girl has the bad habit of biting her own hair.

Thus the diagnosis - trichobezoar.

Trichobezoar: A wad of swallowed hair. Also called a hairball. Trichobezoars can sometimes be found to cause blockage of the digestive system, especially at the exit of the stomach.

Enjoy

Photobucket

Look at the size. It has the shape of the stomach, and even a bit of the duodenum.

Photobucket

A closer look to make you puke. LOL.
