Life without guitar

Posted by peanut on Wednesday Apr 8, 2009 Under cool stuffs, music

is seriously boring! I know that when the guitar is beside me, I would only play it like 15mins per day but hey, it is still a bit of exercises for the fingers and they wouldn’t forget where to press. A bit of training from time to time make them remember where they are suppose to be. I’m not so much talented to play tunes by ears yet. It is all still hardcore practices.

Now, the fear of forgetting all those tunes that I learned after the 4 without-guitar-coming-month is seriously getting to me. Maybe I should steal some people’s guitar to do some practice. Sigh.

I had my first guitar when I was f.2. Bought a kapok guitar for 70 ringgit, then slowly crafted it and stick lotsa stickers on it, used it until the end of Form 5, then I sold it to KahHeng and bought another small neck acoustic guitar from my friend (again second hand). It cost me some RM170. And 2 years back I bought my first electric guitar with the processor and sold them off late last year with the price of 700 ringgit. And now from 2 guitars, I end up with only one acoustic back at home.

Fingers getting itchy!

Sharing you a small video here! Must watch!

Beautifully imperfect..

Med student’s dream

Posted by peanut on Thursday Mar 19, 2009 Under as a med student, cool stuffs

It was a very weird dream tat I had this morning.I’m currently blogging this down using my iPhone in my bed under my blanket at 6.49am. It was a good and special dream, I do not want to forget this.

Dream:

It was a slightly warm morning, I was in short sleeve T (weird because it is winter now and it is still damn cold). I was late for my Gynae class which is actually very far away. I grab some bread n ran out to ride a tuk tuk to class (weird right). Surprisingly there are a few friеnds sharing that small tuk tuk with me.

Along the way, the air was refreshing. It reminds me or morning in Seremban (maybe because I miss those time there). It was quite bright n people are busy with their daily routine. I saw a lot of things on the way - normal wooden houses, green grass, children running happily to school, Chinese temple starting their morning chant, mamak making their prata. It was peaceful, real peaceful!

And then I noticed the tuk tuk is going the wrong way. I was suppose to take a bus! I quickly told that guy to stop n he dropped me down at some old Chinese kopitiam. I remembered seeing those cups n saucers they used to serve milo or coffee last time, so nostalgic!

I took another tuk tuk to this small town where the hospital is situated. I walked in from the entrance n couldn’t help noticing that this hospital is like a community by itself. People live within the hospital area. I saw houses, kids playing around, aunties hanging clothes, and right at the basement of those houses I saw wards! I saw a doctor n few nurses conducting a delivery and another pregnant woman on the other bed reading today’s paper!

Even more weird is, I ran into the clinic, trying to find a way to my class. N this Malay nurse stopped men asked me to read what the doc wrote on the paper. It says ‘mitral valve prolapse’ (I remember it clearly). A few more friendly nurses guided me out to the exit n here I saw 2 fella that I know. One is ErShien who is an engineer. When I saw him, I asked why he was there n he said this is his home. (ErShien stays in Sri Lalang, a small village not far away from Kluang n the scenary I saw does look like a village.) n I saw Huimin. LOL.

She showed me around n I was surprise to find out that the hospital is attached to a school! It gives me a feeling that everybody here was born to b doctor. Like a complete process, they went to primary, n secondary school, n then med school n then work in the hospital which is at the exact same compound! I did not feel weird about that idea. It is indeed quite nice. White school uniform to white doctor’s coat. Plus the environment was so nice n fresh fat I run mind staying longer.

I woke up. It was cold.

Thoughts:

I should say, maybe this dream shows what I want my life to be subconsciously. Hmm. Now, if u would excuse me, I need to go to that far far gynae class now.

Update:

Confirmed! Damn busy days ahead.

How durable is iPhone/iTouch?

Posted by peanut on Tuesday Mar 17, 2009 Under cool stuffs

For a gadget which is so thin, the iPhone and the iTouch seems to be quite fragile to deal with. I found some of the stress test online and the result is definitely amazing.

This is produced by the PC world. If you are lazy to watch the video, let me tell you what can the iPhone/iTouch survive. Scratches are a norm so I’m not going to talk much about that but the gadget survives after dropping in the the cereal box and you could even wash it with water if it is sticky and it still works! Even thou Apple didn’t said that iPhone is water proof but I think I wouldn’t risk on that. It survives much of the drops but the program will still function. However, the screen would be cracked up pretty much.

This is another long video done by some youngsters. This is really the ultimate test. First they drop the iPhone, smashed it around, hit it with the door, grill it with oil, put it under the weight 300 pounds in the gym, hit it with a racket and it still works! Wth…

So after all, it is a pretty durable gadget eh? I don’t really care much about scratches or what, but knowing the maximum ability of this piece of gadget definitely make me more comfortable while holding it.

A picture says a thousand words, in this case it is two :) Or ‘three’.

When iYoges meets iPeanuts. Personally I think that these gadgets are pretty useful for medical students or those working in the medical line because there is even this ‘medical’ category in the iTunes, providing both paid and free medical applications. It certainly boost the usability of the iPhone and definitely put it on par with the other PDA. There are no or limited applications for other professions. I’m not sure why it is that but medical category is definitely well developed by Apple.

Photobucket

The flash cards are pretty useful when you are in a long bus ride or just lying on the bed. And it is absolutely useful during classes. I could just think of something out of the blue and get my answers there and then without the need to go home and flip open those big books.

Most people are iPhone crazy now. Only a few is iTouch kind of crazy but who cares, it is the ‘I’. LOL. But both of them share similar characteristics and the only different is that iTouch could not call and do not have GPS.

Wifi seems to be the life line for these 2 brothers.

Personally, I think the Maxis plan for iPhone is kinda ridiculous. It is expensive, and who invented that table by the way? It seems that it was designed to confuse people! This post is not encouraging you to get one. Haha!

Rights to say No.

Posted by peanut on Thursday Feb 12, 2009 Under as a med student, cool stuffs

This would be quite an interesting post.

Remember the kid with Down syndrome who I blogged about 2 days back? This morning when my friends when to have a chat with his mum. She does not have the faintest idea that her son is having a chromosome disease. Later on the genetic consultants had a talk with her and she was informed finally. Broke down. And the next thing is, she is thinking whether or not to reject her son.

I don’t know what suitable words should be used here. To renounce? To reject? To refuse custody? But I guess it doesn’t mean anything. The baseline is, she is deciding whether or not to abandon him.

The law of the Federation gives permission to mothers to ‘abandon’ the child. It is actually LEGAL. And their care will be taken care of by the federation/government.

Absurd?

The thing is, a mother has the rights to say no without any reason. As long as she wants it. It could be socioeconomic reason - father freaked out, no father, economically impossible, emotionally unstable, wicked mother in-law, or somatic disorders like congenital defects, unhealthy kids, all those syndromes and etc. The baseline understanding here is, they CAN if they WANT TO.

We were quite surprised when this ‘law’ was told to us accidentally by our teacher. Further questioning made it clear that the mothers have their rights to refuse their children when they are in the hospital, despite whatever reason.

At first we thought this is a cruel stupid law, but after some discussions, it actually makes sense.

Russian’s population had been declining. The government had did a lot to increase the reproduction rate, for example- by paying mothers when they give birth, and now this ‘new found’ law (had been around very long but we are ignorant of it).

At least with this ‘rights’, (pros)…

  1. People would not dump their unwanted kids on the streets or even poison/kill them as they can give it to the government. (by this I mean that the kid could have some serious case, not failing some test or what). And alive is definitely better than death. I think nobody wants to be a killer.
  2. Such kids who are with congenital defects or mental retardation can be put under the supervision of a government body. Provided better care compared to those parents who could not or do not want to care for them.
  3. They get basic education! (better than got picked up by some organization and make them into beggers).
  4. Better quality of life. (given food each day, clothes during winter).
  5. IF the parents REPENT or notice one day later that what a great sin they had done in denying that he is their son, they still can repay back, or find him again, instead of facing the fact that they killed them while they were still in the womb or when they were already born.
  6. Personally I think it is a quite humane law.
  7. Hopefully reduce abortion.
  8. The MAIN pro is, they got to live this life.

I think this ‘Right’ is based on the welfare of the children, instead of paying attention to what the parents want because obviously abandoning your children already make them less humane. Even animals don’t do that.

However, maybe with this (cons)..

  1. People do not take raising their children properly?
  2. Am not really sure, but if it is implemented in Malaysia, you will have mum who says ‘If you don’t get no.1 this sem, I’m going to send u to orphanage!’ I guess without this ‘rights’ being practiced in Malaysia, parents had already started to say like that!
  3. I feel that with this ‘right’, it kinda take away some of the main responsibility or moral understanding of a parents because I thought parents are suppose to accept their child no matter what they are.

Personally, I always have the idea of - ‘who am I to determine whether they would want to stay alive or not?’. I started thinking this way when I heard about this famous law suit of a defect child suing the doctor for bringing him to this world and he (the kid) actually won (if not mistaken).

Can’t really think of much harm actually. What do you think?

I don’t know how new is this but I just got to find out on the net that Amateur Transplants had come out with a new album!!! This is the band that I like to listen to besides all my everyday alternative rock dose. If you are a medical student, I don’t see why you don’t like this band!

The previous album Fitness To Practise had been on my Ipod playlist all the time. Those hits like Final Countdowns, Dorsal Horn Concerto and Eternal Clerking are so funny that it is almost like the brand song for med student. And of course The Drug Song as well.

Okay, now I’m going to introduce Amateur Transplants : Unfit For Practise!

Photobucket

It is already playing in my WMP now. Haha! The song is marvelous!!! The album consists of new and old songs at the same time. A rock version of London Underground, the infamous Anaesthetist’s Hymn.

New songs like Finals Fantasy sings about a bad student answering for his clinical exams! I’ll just quote some of the lyrics and down there is the video in Youtube.

Everybody tells me I’ll pass easily,
I’ve been working hard for so long,
But they didn’t realize my exam techniques,
guaranteeing something will go wrong….

I answer all the written papers easily,
But the clinical wouldn’t be so fine
I get so nervous I just can’t perform
Okay come in candidate 6079, tell me,

What do you see?
I don’t know..
Look at his knee..
I don’t know
What does this scar means?
I really don’t know…

All my knowledge seems to have deserted me
Let me give you this, what do you see?
This is Xray showing Crohn’s disease
No it’s not it’s called an ECG…

LOL, if you want to see all these lyrics sang out by 2 of the famous doctors from UK, you know what to do! By the way, I guess the new songs are in the Youtube as well. I don’t know, how can they sing such bad things but yet when I listen to them I’m so happy! Maybe I’m going crazy soon? Try the song ‘King of Dead’ and I bet you will laugh to death! It is only 45seconds!

This time, they are putting subjects name as their songs’ name. Songs like Psychiatry, Gynaecology, and Urology. LOL. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, look at this lyrics of the song Paediatrics-

You need a little patience,
When you trying to examine a child,
It is source of such frustration,
When you need them to keep still for a while,
They fiddle, they gargle, they giggle, they struggle, they wriggle,
No matter how many toys you give them,
They’ll cryyyyyy
God knows whyyyyyyy
You must employ cunning tactics,
when you do paediatrics,
just tryyyyyy,
when you have a little patient.

The video of paediatrics:

Love this song like shit. Haha. Enjoy!!! Sorry if I might get some of the words wrong in the lyrics because I’m doing it just by listening like this. The ‘Urology Clinic B’ is pretty fun too! See.. a fun way in studying medicine! Haha! Can’t stop laughing..

post-mortem review

Posted by peanut on Tuesday Dec 30, 2008 Under as a med student, cool stuffs, medical stuffs

Current weather : Sunny, -10 Celsius.

Doing: Eating instant noodles, pelmeni and cutlet + red wine.

I was watching this Thai horror movie yesterday which end up with the ghost sitting on the guy’s shoulders (looking up and around). Feeling very eerie now because I’m alone at home. Errr.. Scary.

Anyway, let’s count the amount of dead bodies I saw today in the Morph. 1, 2, 3…. I think it should be 5. Yeap, this morning was my post-mortem day for my forensic medicine cycle. Besides the eerieness when I think of yesterday’s movie, I’m actually pretty happy now.

I entered the building and the first thing that welcomes me is the smell! Smell like… dead bodies. And to tell the truth, I don’t really like the idea of seeing dead people on tables and being pushed around by personnels. For one moment I thought this whole process is going to be scary, eerie and disgusting. Everybody was pretty nervous in the waiting room.

We went into the room. Today’s victim is an skinny old man who died on the street. See, I told you, lotsa people die on the street during winter. The weather is cruel. We were quite relunctant to enter the room because there are another dead auntie lying on the other table. And it took us like 5 minutes? Or maybe less and our medical students curiosity kicks in and our hands are everywhere!

It was utterly cool to have 2 experts explaining to us what is going on, where is being cut, what is seen and we have the chance to touch and see for ourselves. The lungs was bubbling when we squeeze it and the adrenal glands are so small! But I guess the smallest ever would be the hypophysis. If he didn’t even point that out, I would thought that it was just some coagulated blood. When the scalp’s skin is over the face, I think even the most timid girl in our group felt okay and didn’t actually fainted (I was expecting that). We started with checking of internal organs, and saw cardiosclerosis, ‘fresh’ infarction and normal heart muscles in his heart (the cause of death) and then to the brain, the 12 cranial nerves and revised some signs of death on the patient.

I got blood on my arms.

But luckily my white coat is clean. LOL. (meaning no need to wash).

And it lasted for some 1 hour. I was anticipating for the chance to cut things myself but well, the teachers never initiated anything of that kind and so I kept quiet. It is end of the year! I would consider ‘not cutting other people’s body’ as a good deed this year.

If you want me to summarize today’s class, well, this is a very good experience! But I have some documents to fill up, one being the crime scene report and the other one would be the autopsy report. Hate homeworks on new year holidays.

That’s all for now. 1 last day to new year!

The flying canai

Posted by peanut on Thursday Dec 18, 2008 Under cool stuffs

Nowadays I like to search for stupid stuffs on youtube, something like mat rempit la, gaduh la, spooky clips la, ahli parliament tumbuk la, even taiwan parliament gaduh beramai-ramai I also watch. But since my blog is kinda holy compared to my real personality, I’ll put up this video that maybe some of you never watch before. Never know Roti Canai can be played like this leh?

And another favourite and most hated movie that I like during my younger days!

Do you know why the chinese vampire hops around?

A supposed source of the jiang shi stories came from the folk practice of “Traveling a Corpse over a Thousand Li“, where traveling companions or family members who could not afford wagons or had very little money would hire Taoist priests to transport corpses of their friends/family members who died far away from home over long distances by teaching them to hop on their own feet back to their hometown for proper burial. Taoist priests would transport the corpses only at night and would ring bells to notify other pedestrians of their presence because it was considered bad luck for a living person to set eyes upon a jiang shi. This practice was popular in Xiangxi where many people left their hometown to work elsewhere. After they died, their corpses were transported back to their rural hometown using long bamboo rods, believing they would be homesick if buried somewhere unfamiliar. When the bamboo flexed up and down, the corpses appeared to be hopping in unison from a distance. - Taken from Wikipedia.
