Movie review - Count of Monte Cristo
Posted by peanut on Tuesday Apr 21, 2009 Under movie reviewsWatched this movie titled ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ while I was having my dinner during the weekend. It is based on an adventure novel by Alexandre Dumas (also the writer of The Three Musketeers). The book was completed in 1844. Many directors have tried to produce the film and I watched the 2002 film, which is the 10th film based loosely upon the book.
Plot-
The story is pretty straight forward. An honest, righteous, illiterate guy called Edmond Dantes, was betrayed by his friend (Fernand Mondego, rich, son of count) who is jealous with him for having a pretty girlfriend. Mondego had a plan that end up with the capture of Dantes and later on Dantes was sent to jail. In the jail, he came to know a priest soldier, who later on taught him how to read, write, fight, and even told him the place where he hid the treasure of Spada.
He escaped the jail, found the treasure, and proceeded with his revenge plan which end up with the killing of Mondego and he lives happily ever after with his wife.
My 2 cents-
There are few things that I like about this movie. First of all, it fully shows my idea of ‘you need to be a demon to subdue another demon’. I know, maybe some people would think that revenge is useless and it just makes the world a worse place to live in but I truly believes that something should be done in this way in order to stop other people from becoming the victims to their wrong doing. Of course, this idea only apply if somebody is really bad.
In real life, there is not a lot of white and black. But there is seriously a lot of gray.
There is this chinese proverb -
Literally it means (in the modern way) life is a movie by itself, and movies always reflect what life is about. But I think this is only correct until certain point. In movies, most of the time there is a forever bad team, and another team of forever good people. In real life, your ‘good’ might be somebody’s ‘bad’. The stand is subjective. And not everybody vote for good. We do stand beside our friends no matter how wrong they are right?
Anyway, good movie, recommended!
