Going Down
Posted by peanut on Wednesday Feb 11, 2009 Under as a med studentI seriously think that my blog is turning into some medical journal.
Today, met a 1 month old boy baby with Down syndrome. I guess the name is pretty common and most people know roughly how a Down syndrome (trisomy 21) kid would look like. If not mistaken, the famous Hongkong series “Fei Mao (fat cat)” is about the story of a guy with Down syndrome. However, for medical students, there are some keywords to remember in order to describe Down syndrome ‘professionally’.
Here I attached a song done by Amateur Transplant, the 2 UK doctors who like to sing medical related stuffs. The song is of course a bit wrong by the ‘mood’ and ‘feel’ but it contains some of the keywords that we gotta remember.
For those that do not like to view video, this is the lyric.
Can you see, that’s baby’s heart beating there on the monitor.
And look there are it’s little arms and it’s little legs.
Um, I’m not quite sure what that bit is, no.
Your baby’s got a flattened nose
A widened gap between its toes
It’s smaller than it’s supposed to be
The scan shows your baby’s got an imperforate rectum
And there’s a big hole in his atrial septum
He’s got signs of left heart failure
And quite abnormal genitalia
I’ll print out the scan so you can see
There’s something quite wrong with your baby
Your baby has Trisomy
He’ll have abnormal motor function
Thanks to meiotic non-dysjunction
You shouldn’t have kids at 53
He’ll have severe mental retardation
How would you feel about a termination
I doubt he’ll live past 10 years old
Check out his epicanthic folds and his single palmar crease
A bit of a mong your baby
Your baby has trisom, it’s what he will die from,
Your baby has trisomy.
Do not get me wrong. I’m absolutely against abortion or anything but this is just the song. It is seriously a blessing to be born well, healthy and even going to med school.
Well, back to the baby. The mother of the baby is not aware that he is having Down syndrome. And she was only 20! You can view the probability of Down Syndrome as a function of maternal age here. It is good that Malaysia government is helping these babies to survive by setting up special schools for them. I myself personally had the experience of spending a few days holidays with these kids back in Malaysia. Mum is quite active in the organization so I just tagged along. Well, I would say, do not get scare of them, they have as much rights to survive as you and me.
